In one of the mornings in the year of 1959, he never wake up from his sleep. From that day onwards, his wife - 刘叶 Liu Ye made all the children work, if possible stop going to school, in order for the family to survive. She had to wash clothes for people, sew floor mats and blankets to earn some money. The family could only afford to drink soft drinks (F&N orange) during Chinese New Year.
Their eldest son - 黄声江 Ng Kau @ Ng Seng Kang was only 11 years old. He sells ice creams after school. He aimed to earn one dollar everyday. His contribution to the family was 50 cents per day and he will save the excess. If he ever fails to bring 50cents home to the mother, he will be beaten with rotan. As he grows taller and stronger, he started to cut grass for a catholic church, cut woods and all kinds of part time works. He was known as a hardworking boy in Muar.
Of all, he never gave up his studies. He loves to study. In fact, he was one of the brightest kid in school. Because he was poor, he could not afford to buy text books. He had to borrow text books from his classmates to copy and summarise all the important chapters. He was also active in scout activies and obtained the certificate of King Scout.
He was an ambitious man. By giving part-time tuition, he managed to complete his Form 6 in Cyma College in KL. There, he met his wife 林月明 Ling Ngo Mey. With scholarship, he furthered his studies (Bachelor of Social Sciences) in Penang University. Not long after that, Ling flew to London for nursing studies. They write to each other very often. After he graduated, he works in the university as one of the examination officers. He was waiting for Ling to return to Malaysia to get married. She was even more ambitious. After working as a nurse for some years, she decided to challenge herself in pursuing a law degree. He realised he could not lose her. With special recommendation by his lecturer, he obtained a partial scholarship to study law in London. In addition to his savings and income from giving tuitions, he also loaned some money from his brothers-in-law who were well-to-do. He gave up his job, packed up his bag and flew to London.
In London, he lived with Ling and her siblings. They worked in restaurants & factories, worked as security guards, store detectives etc to survive until they finally graduated. In 1977, they were registered as husband and wife in the United Kingdom. They returned to Malaysia and finally settled down in Muar. They started their own law firm - 黄声江律师馆 "Ng Seng Kang & Partners" after 3 years working in KL. They purchased a house in Taman Murni and have 3 children.
He became a succesful lawyer, having a wonderful family - a beautiful wife, and 3 lovely children. In his success, he never forget about the poor. He remembered very well his days of struggle. He made donations of thousands and thousands dollars to schools, charity clubs and societies. Starting from 1987, he spent more than ten thousand dollars to donate various books, including encyclopedias, dictionaries, story books like enid blyton, text books etc. He also was the founder of 雪中炭之家 Xue Zhong Tan Zi Jia in Muar, a club to help the poor in town. He set up library for the club and contributed more than 2000 books.
In 1997, he won the Heart of Gold.
In 1998, he was interviewed by 星洲日报 Sin Chew Daily Newspaper for his good deeds to the society.
In year 2000, he passed away because of diabetes and heart disease.
He left behind his wife and 3 children - Alex, Joan and Anne.
These are just some pieces of stories about my late father. The image of my father to me... is still vague. Not until his cousin from China came to visit my mum and brother last week, I started to want to find out more about him. I wish I could ask him personally more about his life and whether he truly believes in Jesus when he attended church in his younger days... I wish..
One thing i remember very well, he was a good father.
I thank God for them.
I am proud, to be part of the story. God, you truly is a creative author of life.
p/s: this is a re-post. :) Still miss him a lot.
